IPL hair removal is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses broad-spectrum light to target and disable hair follicles.

This light energy is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in your hair. The absorbed light is then converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle, inhibiting its ability to regrow hair.

Over a series of treatments, this leads to a significant reduction in hair growth.

IPL works best on individuals with darker hair and lighter skin tones. This is because the light is attracted to the melanin in the hair follicle. While advancements in technology allow for the treatment of a wider range of skin tones, very light (blonde, grey, white) or red hair may not respond as effectively as it lacks sufficient pigment.

How often you will need treatments depends on the area treated; some areas such as the face have a higher rate of hair turnover and will require treatment every 3 weeks, compared to areas with a lower rate of hair turnover such as the legs, which require treatment every 4-6 weeks.

IPL only affects hair follicles in their growing phase. As only a small percentage of hairs are in this growing phase at any one time, this is the reason that multiple treatments are needed to capture as many of the hairs in the growing phase as possible. Most areas will need 6-8 treatments for a good result of up to 80% hair reduction.

First, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. A cooling gel will then be applied to the treatment area to enhance comfort and optimise light delivery. You'll also be provided with protective eyewear.

During the treatment, your practitioner will use a handheld Cynosure Icon applicator to deliver pulses of light to your skin. You'll feel a sensation often described as a mild flick, similar to a rubber band against the skin. Most clients tolerate this sensation well.

The treatment time varies depending on the size of the area being treated.

After your treatment your clinician will discuss post-treatment care with you to ensure best results.

You can typically return to your normal daily activities almost immediately after the session

Immediately after treatment most people experience a mild, sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor swelling immediately following the treatment. This usually lasts two to 24 hours.
